Set......
To settle upon an idea or action requires a decision to be made based on the available choices at hand. A chess set provides this opportunity in the form of a game; however the choices available to the player are dependent on the established hierarchy of the pieces in the set.
This notion of hierarchy can also be seen in mechanical systems. The gear set in an automobile utilizes components with varying scale to manipulate and harness rotation for the purpose of controlling torque.
In the creation of digital or amplified music, the artist makes choices over time via an array of control settings that allow the manipulation of pitch, rhythm, tempo and volume.
The examples above explore the meaning of set in relation to time (music), strategy (game) and utility (rotation), all of which require the independent parts of a set to be manipulated for the purpose of creating a greater whole (gestalt theory)
